The Place Where Time Stands Still

The Word

You have bedded me down in lush meadows,

you find me quiet pools to drink from.

True to your word,

you let me catch my breath

and send me in the right direction.

Talk it Out

The town saying up in Essex, Montana is this: a place where time stands still and lets you catch up. I have found that to be true. There's something about a place where the hearth warmly crackles amid the conversation of cross-country skiers, or where wildflowers bloom along old rails. Just south of the Continental Divide where the population peaks around three hundred, it is easy to find rest.

The absence of societal noise, however, does not guarantee rest, at least not the sustainable kind. Maybe you've noticed that even with the television off and the windows open, you heart is restless.

In the second and third verses of Psalm 23, we find the Shepherd tenderly enforcing rest. It's not much different than taking a toddler back to her bed over and over again until she finally surrenders to the sleep she needs. The Shepherd knows what's best for his sheep, and he offers only the best for his sheep: lush meadows, quiet pools, a chance to catch our breath. A sense of purpose, vision.
